24 years connecting Ivančice with the world

Twenty-four years of exchanges, courses and volunteers from all over Europe in one house on the edge of a town of ten thousand. Told through photos and the words of the people who were there.

Scroll to walk through 24 years

Horizont – Leisure Centre Ivančice has been building international cooperation since 2002. It began with staff study visits and exchanges of experience; youth exchanges, hosting foreign volunteers, training for youth workers and projects that young people carry out in their own community followed.

The programmes and how they follow on

The Youth in Action programme (2007–2013) supported non-formal learning, intercultural dialogue and the active participation of young people: youth exchanges, youth initiatives, participatory-democracy projects, European Voluntary Service and youth-worker training. From 2014 Erasmus+, the joint European programme for education, training, youth and sport, took over. Its first period ran 2014–2020; the current programme period runs 2021–2027.

European Voluntary Service (EVS) let young people volunteer abroad, first under Youth in Action and from 2014 under Erasmus+. It was succeeded by the European Solidarity Corps (ESC), a stand-alone programme since 2018 that, besides volunteering, supports solidarity projects in which groups of young people help their local community.

2002–2015

Study visits and professional meetings

The staff of SVČ Ivančice gained their first experience by visiting organisations abroad. The trips let them compare approaches to leisure and youth work, meet new partners and prepare the ground for later joint projects.

2009–2020

European Voluntary Service

Volunteers from abroad joined the centre's everyday work, its clubs, camps and events. Between 2009 and 2020 the centre hosted 48 volunteers, 13 of them within a strategic project in 2017–2020. Because of the covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine this type of activity is paused for now.

Effective cooperation – wide impact

2017–2020 · Strategic European Voluntary Service

Three years, thirteen volunteers from across Europe and one aim: to make foreign volunteers part of everyday life in Ivančice. They helped in clubs, at camps and events, worked with the Ivančicko, Krumlovsko and Kahan micro-regions and taught children about technology, digital and media literacy and languages.

Upgrade: board games and escape rooms in non-formal education

2019–2022 · Youth-worker mobility

A course that waited two years because of the pandemic: on 9–17 June 2022 board-game enthusiasts from Czechia, Slovakia and Ukraine met in Ivančice. In a week they got to know almost a hundred games, tried card, room and outdoor escape games and invented their own activities for camps.

8 photos · Horizont, IvančiceFull album on Zonerama

The meeting showed that with board and escape games age and nationality do not matter at all; all you need is the wish to play. We found that it is not only true that those who play don't misbehave, but also that THOSE WHO PLAY DON'T GROW OLD.“

2020–2023 · Long-term training course for youth workers

Two weeks in Ivančice – 17–25 February and 22–28 April 2022 – and a home phase in between, in which participants from nine countries tested their own educational games with young people at home. Eleven games were born, from Ethical game to Journey to the centre of us. Add an intercultural evening, Easter celebrated together and trips to Brno and to the Slav Epic in Moravský Krumlov.

Make Yourself Visible 2

2020–2022 · Youth-worker mobility

A sequel to the 2018 course on how a small organisation can look big. In October 2021, 24 youth workers learned to build their organisation's brand and wrote a guide to online tools; at the end of March 2022 came practice – a content calendar, stop-motion videos, posters and lessons on social-media algorithms from Izza, a marketing expert from Pakistan. On the intercultural table Norwegian strawberries with white chocolate met Ukrainian smoked meat and Greek tzatziki.

Let's Make a Story

2021–2023 · Youth-worker mobility

How to tell a story in a comic. In November 2022 participants from ten countries learned to build and draw a story; in February 2023 the comics took shape – Where is home?, Erasmus+ opens doors, Choose to be a superstar and Heart knows the way – and at the end of the course the authors presented them to the Ivančice public.

We Are One: Harmony in Diversity

2022–2023 · Youth-worker mobility

Peace education for fifteen nationalities. In December 2022 the talk was of diversity and prejudice, in April 2023 of what breaks peace and how to restore it – and lesson plans for youth work were written. In between: a Peace dance workshop, the ceramics workshop, the Brno underground and the Papilonia butterfly farm.

Training for Trainers: Empower & Facilitate

2025–2026 · Youth-worker mobility

The newest project: 27 educators, trainers and youth workers from nine countries. The first course, 26 September to 2 October 2025, was about facilitation and non-formal education methods; local practice follows, and a second course in 2026 covers creative tools – storytelling, theatre, gamification and visual facilitation. The goal is a European network of trainers that outlasts the project.

Accreditation and quality

  1. 2008Accreditation for European Voluntary ServiceFirst accreditation as a hosting organisation; the follow-on Erasmus+ Volunteering accreditation was granted in 2016.
  2. 2019System audit of Erasmus+: YouthThe audit of 17 October 2019 independently confirmed that the programme delivery system is set up at a good level and recommended several improvements in project organisation and control.
  3. 2020European Solidarity Corps Quality LabelNumber 2020-1-CZ01-ESC52-QLA-094497-01, hosting and supporting role, valid until 31 December 2027.
  4. 2025Erasmus+ accreditation in the field of youthNumber 2025-1-CZ01-KA150-YOU-000384620, valid until 31 December 2027. It allows international activities to be planned for the long term.

What we take from it

Since the first study visits in 2002, the international activity of SVČ Ivančice has grown to include youth exchanges, youth-worker training, hosting foreign volunteers and projects that young people run in their own community. What we have learned flows back into the centre's everyday work: its methods, its partnerships and the opportunities we offer children and young people in Ivančice.

Gaining Erasmus+ youth accreditation is the next step. In the accreditation application we set ourselves the goals of developing quality youth exchanges and training courses, strengthening cooperation with foreign partners and opening activities to young people with fewer opportunities. We want to keep training our staff, use new non-formal education methods and build sustainability into how projects are prepared.

Our aim is for international cooperation to keep paying off after a project ends. We want to use participants' experience, staff's new skills and the partnerships we have built in the organisation's everyday programmes, and share them with young people and other organisations in the region.

Want to be part of it?

More courses and exchanges are being prepared under the accreditation running to 2027. If international projects appeal to you – as a participant, a youth worker or a partner organisation – write to Markéta Chmelíčková, who coordinates Horizont's international activity.
